In July Gabriel Llewellyn-Hyde, Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) for the North West, delivered a stirring address at the Hampshire County Council full council meeting. His speech marked a poignant moment in the council’s calendar, aligning with the global movement of Plastic Free July—a campaign that encourages individuals and communities to reduce plastic pollution and protect our planet.

Gabriel opened his reflections with a nod to Louis Armstrong’s iconic lyrics, “What a wonderful world,” before challenging the audience to consider whether that sentiment still holds true. “We live in a world where nature is deteriorating, where animals are fighting for their last breath,” he said, painting a vivid picture of environmental decline. His words served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for action.

In a speech that was both poetic and passionate, Gabriel didn’t shy away from holding humanity accountable. “Those who stripped the Earth without a second glance… those who saw the warning signs but refused to act,” he declared, urging listeners to reflect on their role in the planet’s future. Yet, his message was ultimately one of hope and empowerment. “With hope as your sword and determination as your shield, nothing can stop you to rebuild our tomorrow,” he concluded, calling on everyone to be part of the solution.

Gabriel’s presence and voice at the council meeting was a powerful testament to the role young people are playing in shaping environmental discourse. His words not only resonated with councillors but also served as a rallying cry for collective action—reminding us all that together, we can still make it a wonderful world.
